I’ve loved to create for as long as I can remember. As a child I spent endless hours crocheting, drawing, painting, etc. I learned to sew when I was 12, and loved it immediately. My mother would take me to the fabric store, and buy me anything I needed for a project, and then let me run with it.
I have always had a million ideas of things I wanted to sew, but back in the days before online shopping, the problem often was that I couldn’t find the fabrics I was looking for. I became very frustrated with that, and vowed that someday, somehow, I would design my own fabrics. That was many years ago.
One day recently, I was complaining to my (boutique clothing designer) niece about how I needed to find my niche in the creative world, and figure out how to make some money for my (large) family and still fulfill my creative needs. She promised me that I had the ability to design fabric, (my old dream!) and gave me some information I needed to get started. I decided to take a chance. Although I had no formal training aside from a couple of college art classes, I did have a supportive husband, (and niece) and a lot of faith.
Long story short, I was really lucky to be picked up by Moda Fabrics as a designer. What will happen now is yet to be seen. But it’s an exciting new challenge for me! It has been an interesting journey so far, and I have pressed blindly forward at times, not knowing what I was doing, and just going on faith. Happily it has turned out to be more fun than I ever imagined.
I believe that you are never too old, or too uneducated to start doing something you’ve always wanted to do. Whether you have a degree, or you’ve been spending the last however many years mostly changing diapers and driving carpools, if you are willing to take it on, you can channel your God-given abilities with His help, and do whatever you dream of doing!
